Elume Candles
BEFORE BURNING THE CANDLE
Whether you are about to light a jar candle or a pillar candle, some basic steps should be followed to ensure a beautiful clean burn without smoking or tunneling. Tunneling is where only the wax surrounding the wick melts, a tunnel down the centre of the candle is created wasting redundant wax around the edge. We recommend burning your elume pillar candle and jar candls within 12-18 months of purchase. Over time, the composition of the wax and fragrances can change, if you have not burned the candle within a couple of years of purchase, we do not recommend lighting the candle.
Elume Pillar Candles: First, remove the elume label off the pillar candle and place candle on a non-flammable, heat proof dish. Never place pillar candle directly on a surface such as a table, kitchen bench or windowsill. Straighten the wick before lighting.
CANDLE PLACEMENT
Elume Pillar candles and jar candles should be positioned away from anything that can catch on fire, away from children and pets and away from draughts such as windows or air conditioning to avoid smoking. Only light, if candle is always within sight. As candles need oxygen to burn efficiently, we do not recommend using large candles in small rooms like bathrooms. The moisture in a bathroom will affect the burn of the candle.
Elume Pillar Candles: If you are burning the candle in a group, arrange candles at least 10 cm apart to avoid melting or dripping into each other. If placing inside a lantern or container, the heat inside can accelerate the burn, melt the candle and lead to dripping (see image in middle below). Make sure the container is large enough to keep the candle away from the sides, ideally allowing at least 3cm between the edge of the candle and the sides of the container. If smoking does occur, this is an indication that the vessel is too small for the candle. Never place an elume Outdoor candle inside. These candles are designed to burn outside as the wicks will smoke (see image on right below) to repel insects.
FIRST BURN
Elume Jar Candle: When lighting your jar candle for the first time, allow your candle to burn until the soy wax melts across the entire surface of the jar. Creating this smooth burn will prevent tunneling and allow your candle to last longer. With our Luxury Soy candles, burn for more than an hour and never burn for more than 4 hours. Burn Boutique Soy Candles and Elegant Christmas Candles for more than an hour and never more than 3 hours. For our Petite Soy Candles and Minis, burn for more than 30 minutes, and no more than 2 hours.
Elume Pillar Candles: When lighting your elume pillar candle for the first time, allow burning until the wax melts close to the edge of the pillar candle, leaving approximately a 1cm edge (with our larger Rustic candles, the Medium, Large and X-Large 3-wicks, leave a 2cm edge). Be sure to set aside a few hours to allow for the proper burn time. Creating this wax pool will allow your candle to last longer and not tunnel down the middle. With your elume Three Wick Candle, allow the 3 wax pools to met and form one large wax pool.
If the wick is getting too long and smoking, extinguish, let cool, trim the wick to 6mm and relight.
FIRST BURN TIME FOR YOUR ELUME PILLAR CANDLE
Always allow plenty of time for this initial process. Aim to allow 1 hour of burning time for every 2cm diameter melt. It must be done properly to ensure longevity of your candle. This initial burn sets the candle memory, the wax will not melt beyond this point in subsequent burns.
The times below are the recommended first burn and total burn times for your elume candle. Please be aware, these are recommended times only, never leave a candle burning unattended, if the candle is placed in a draft or in a lantern, these times will be greatly impacted.

HOW TO EXTINGUISH YOUR CANDLE
Avoid blowing your candle out, this can lead to wax splattering and smoke filling the room. Instead, extinguish with a dipper. Simply dip the wick into the hot wax pool with the end of a dipper, then straighten back up. This is the most efficient way to extinguish a candle. Never extinguish a candle with water. Once cooled, be sure to trim the wick and ensure the wax pool is free of debris before your next lighting. Never move a burning candle, ensure candle has been extinguished and wax is solid and candle cooled before moving. The glass of the jar candles may become hot. Do not handle until cooled.
CANDLE MAINTENANCE
Trim the wick to 6mm for every burn after the initial lighting. The shorter wick encourages a brighter and stable flame. A longer wick will cause smoking and mushrooming of the wick. Mushrooming is when the top of the wick forms a mushroom shape distorting the shape of the flame. To avoid smoking, keep the wax pool free of debris, away from draughts, and keep the wick at 6mm. Ensure the wax pool is kept clean, free of dust, pieces of wick that have broken off, of matchsticks and of anything that may catch on fire.
Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. If pillar candle is left in direct sunlight (even without being lit), the wax may discolour, melt and distort the shape of your candle. If candle is placed on anything that gets hot in sun, such as a glass plate or lantern, if left in a sunny position, the glass will cause the wax to melt and distort candle. When the candle only has 1cm left, discontinue use. With jar candles, when not in use, place lid back on jar to avoid dust buildup.
After the initial burn, burning your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time will maintain the integrity of the wick coating that we apply and ensure the wicks will stay upright and away from the sides of the candle. If a flame goes too close to the side of the jar, there is a chance the glass will crack from the heat. At elume, we use extra-long, self-extinguishing wick tabs to make sure the candle doesn’t burn too close to the bottom. As one more safety feature, we have our glassware thermal shock tested against extreme heat.
Each candle is different, while we recommend not allowing your candle to burn for more than 4 hours on subsequent burns to the first burn, there are many factors that will greatly reduce this time. Candle placement for example is a huge factor. When a candle is a light, it must be monitored at all times to ensure the candle is burning correctly and safely. Ensure you blow a pillar candle out as soon as it melts to 1cm from the end of the candle (or 2cm with our larger rustic and outdoor candles).
Most importantly, enjoy your candle but never leave a burning candle unattended.
